Why It's So Important to Work with a Fee-Only Fiduciary Advisor

Whether you're looking for a financial advisor for the first time or thinking about making a switch, it's worth stopping to ask: what traits should you look for in a financial advisor?

You probably want someone trustworthy. Someone personable and easy to talk to. Someone confident, experienced, and good at what they do. All of those matter. But not all of them are easy to judge from a first meeting.

Personality and confidence come through quickly. Trust is harder, because an advisor's interests and yours might not always point in the same direction. Two things decide whether they do: the standard an advisor is held to, and the way they get paid.

So how do you know where an advisor stands on both? You ask them. And there are two words you want to hear in their answer: fiduciary and fee-only. A fiduciary is required to put your interests ahead of their own. A fee-only advisor is paid only by you, with no commissions from the products they recommend. When an advisor is both, you can be confident about the two things that matter most.

Here's a closer look at each term, and why Launch Wealth is a fee-only fiduciary financial advisory firm:

The Standard: The Meaning of Fiduciary

A fiduciary is someone who is required to act in your best interest. That means putting your interests ahead of their own, giving advice they believe is genuinely best for your situation, and avoiding or clearly disclosing any conflicts of interest. That sounds simple. But not every fiduciary duty is the same, and it helps to understand that there are two different kinds:

A legal fiduciary duty is one required by law. Launch Wealth as a Registered Investment Adviser (RIA) is held to a fiduciary standard under federal and state securities law. That duty is enforceable. If an advisor breaks it, there are real regulatory and legal consequences.

Ethical Fiduciary

An ethical fiduciary duty is a professional standard an advisor commits to, often through a credential. The clearest example is the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation. CFP® professionals agree to the CFP Board's Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct, which requires them to act as a fiduciary at all times when providing financial advice to a client. Not just when managing investments. Not just in certain parts of a meeting. All of it. At Launch Wealth, the financial advice you receive comes from a CFP® professional, so this standard applies to every conversation we have with you.

Why This Distinction Matters

Some advisors wear more than one hat. They may act as a fiduciary when managing your investments, but when they recommend an insurance or brokerage product, a different standard, often called suitability or best interest, may apply instead. That standard requires a recommendation to be appropriate for you, but not necessarily the best option for you. This is legal, and many advisors who work this way are honest people. Still, it's worth knowing which standard applies to each recommendation you receive. A good question to ask any advisor is simple: "Are you acting as a fiduciary for everything you recommend to me, all the time?"

At Launch Wealth, the answer is always yes. We are both a legal and an ethical fiduciary, in every conversation and for every recommendation. There's no other hat to switch to.

The Paycheck: The Meaning of Fee-Only

Where "fiduciary" tells you what standard an advisor follows, "fee-only" tells you how they get paid. And how someone gets paid has a way of shaping what they recommend.

A fee-only advisor is paid only by their clients. No commissions on products. No kickbacks. No revenue sharing with an insurance company or fund company. The only fee the advisor earns comes directly from the people they serve.

To see why that matters, it helps to compare the three ways advisors are typically paid:

  • Fee-Only: paid only by their clients. No commissions, ever.

  • Commission-Based: paid only through commissions from the companies whose products they sell, usually when you buy something.

  • Fee-Based: paid both ways. They can charge you a fee and also earn commissions on the products they recommend.

Fee-based is the one that trips people up. It sounds almost identical to fee-only, and many people assume the two mean the same thing. They don't. A fee-based advisor can charge you a fee for advice and still earn a commission when you buy a recommended insurance policy, annuity, or investment product. The fee is easy to see. The commission is often much harder to see, and that's where a conflict of interest can hide.

When an advisor is fee-only, that incentive simply isn't there. The only way they do well is by serving you well.

The Importance of Being Fee-Only and Fiduciary

Fiduciary and fee-only work best together. Fiduciary is the promise to put you first. Fee-only removes the biggest reason that promise could ever be tested. An advisor who is a fiduciary but also earns commissions has to manage a conflict every time a commission-paying product comes up. A fee-only fiduciary never has that conflict to manage in the first place.

Fair Word to Other Advisors

None of this means an advisor who isn't fee-only, or who isn't a fiduciary in every role, is a bad advisor. There are plenty of excellent, caring advisors who work under different models and serve their clients well.

This is about clarity. When you understand how an advisor is paid and which standard they're held to, you can ask better questions and make a more confident decision about who you trust.

Launch Wealth: Why We've Been Fee-Only and Fiduciary Since Day One

Launch Wealth exists because of something we saw happen far too often: people sitting in products that didn't make sense for their situation. Too often, it seemed the product that paid the highest commission was simply the one that always got recommended. We didn't want to build a firm that worked that way.

So Launch Wealth was built as a fee-only fiduciary firm from day one. As a Registered Investment Adviser, we are legally required to act in your best interest. Our founder, Ethan Lang, is also a CFP® professional, which holds him to a fiduciary standard at all times when giving financial advice. And because we're fee-only, the only revenue we earn is the fee our clients pay us directly. Since the day we opened, we have never received a single penny in commissions.

We want you to be completely confident that every recommendation we make is aligned with your best interest, because we're required to make it that way, and because there's nothing on our side pulling it in another direction.
